Why stop at La Piazzetta

Four good reasons
to step into the courtyard

Courtyard • Cuisine • Cellar • Conviviality

The Via Postumia passed through here and, a few steps away, lay the forum of Roman Verona: for two thousand years this has been the place where the city meets. La Piazzetta keeps that spirit alive: a quiet courtyard in the heart of the historic centre, a kitchen that tells the story of the land and a glass always ready.

The story of the place

Corte San Giovanni in Foro,
where Verona meets

The courtyard takes its name from the church of San Giovanni in Foro, which faces Corso Porta Borsari, the ancient decumanus maximus: «in Foro» because it stands next to the forum of Roman Verona, today Piazza delle Erbe. Every stone around here tells of two thousand years of encounters.

  1. The Via Postumia

The consul Spurius Postumius Albinus lays out the road linking Genoa to Aquileia. In Verona it becomes the decumanus maximus: today's Corso Porta Borsari.

  2. Porta Borsari and the forum

The ancient Porta Iovia, today Porta Borsari, is the main entrance to the city: under Emperor Claudius it is given its white stone façades. The decumanus leads straight to the forum, where Piazza delle Erbe is today.

  3. San Giovanni in Foro

On the decumanus rises the Romanesque church of San Giovanni, called «in Foro» because it was built next to the Roman forum.

  4. The great fire

A fire devastates Verona and damages the church: an inscription on its side still recalls it, «combusta est civitas Verone».

  5. The Giolfino portal

On the street side opens the portal attributed to Girolamo Giolfino, with statues of the saints; in the lunette Nicolò Giolfino frescoes Saint John on Patmos.

  6. La Piazzetta

In the courtyard that bears the church's name, an osteria with a wine bar where Verona still meets, over a traditional dish and a glass of Valpolicella.
